Mr. Steven T. Tan, President of SM Supermalls, was named as Winshang's Golden Censer Prize winner – "The International Influential People of 2023 in Shopping Centers" in the award ceremony held during 2023 China (International) Shopping Center Summit, Shanghai, August 24.

The Golden Censer Prize, initiated by Winshang, in collaboration with mainstream industrial media, based on field researches, data analysis and media surveys etc., is a large-scale professional recognition to China commercial real estates and famous brands. The aim is to promote the internationalization process of China's commercial real estate industry.

Mr. Steven Tan was appointed in 2020 as the President of SM Supermalls by SM Prime, one of the leading integrated property developers in Southeast Asia, taking charge of mall operations in both Philippines and China and continuing SM's 65-year legacy of retail innovation and customer service.

Embracing uncertainties and hidden perils that come with the pandemic has taught Steven and members of his SM family to become more agile, more innovative and more responsive to everyone's needs – from stakeholders to employees, tenants to shoppers – to turn challenges into opportunities.

Going with the new flow and evolving along with customers and the market, SM's new strategies and tactics are organized into four main categories: evolving our tenancy mix, creating new reasons to visit malls, marketing to new customer segments and development of omni-channel services.

Mr. Steven Tan and his SM family powered through first half 2023 together. SM Supermalls exceeded 2019 pre-pandemic revenues and income by 13% and 11%. In line with the latest extension program, three malls in both China and the Philippines is about to unveil in the second half. At that time, Mr. Tan will lead the operation of 93 shopping centers, with a total construction area of over 10.8 million square meters and a daily foot traffic of over 4.8 million.

For his exemplary efforts, Mr. Steven Tan was honored as 2021 Asia's Most Influential by TATLER, 2022 Asia Pacific WEPs Awards Leadership Commitment by UN Women, Global Filipino Executive of the Year by Asian CEO awards, 2023 People of the Year by PeopleAsia etc.

Executive Profile

Mr. Steven Tan acquired his Master's Degree in Business Administration from Paris School of Management. He began his career in hospitality management in various hotel properties in China including Taipei and Shanghai before returning to the Philippines to pursue his career in marketing and communications industry. He joined SM in 2004.

Mr. Steven Tan successively served as Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, extending his oversight to the Premier Malls Division composed of SM Mall of Asia, SM Megamall, SM City North Edsa and SM's China mall properties, paving the way for SM's entry into the upscale mall positioning. He was appointed as the President of SM Supermalls in 2020.
